How to Make an Electronic Listening Device
If you want to find out what your kids are up to or need to make sure that no company secrets are leaving the office, you can use a listening device to hear what's going on in the next room. To do this you can create a device using a stethoscope and a digital recorder. This will allow you to hear through walls and keep an accurate record of what is being said.

Remove the ear buds from the stethoscope. Using the drill, hollow out the ear buds so the microphone ends can fit into them. You should hollow out the large end of the ear bud --- not the side that attaches to the stethoscope, rather the side that goes into the ear canal. If you cannot fit the end of the microphone into the ear bud you may need to disassemble the microphone by removing the plastic end of it.

Glue the microphones to the ear buds and wait for them to dry. Place the ear buds back onto the stethoscope.

Take the ends of the cable and plug them into a stereo Y adapter. These can be purchased from any stereo or electronics store for about $10 as of 2010. Plug the Y adapter into a mini-cassette or mini digital recorder.

Place the stethoscope up to the wall or door to listen and press the record button on the cassette recorder. You can also hide the stethoscope in a room with the recorder and leave it to record.
