Advertised as one of the safest and most trouble-free towing solutions on the market, the Roadmaster series of tow bars are quite popular for enthusiasts who do not wish to purchase a full sized auto trailer. Align the holes in both Roadmaster mounting brackets with the holes in the crossbar component (there are four holes, two on either end). Insert 2 3/4-inch bolts first through the mounting bracket holes, then through the crossbar holes. When you are finished, there will be a mounting bracket located on each end of the crossbar component, each secured with two bolts not yet tightened.

    • 2

Locate the vehicle's frame crossbar at the front of the vehicle, between the left and right side frame rails. Place the mounting bracket/crossbar component against the crossbar; align the holes so that the bolts in the mounting bracket will extend through the crossbar holes.

Place a washer and lock nut onto the end of each bolt, and tighten securely using a 3/4-inch socket and crescent wrench. If a torque wrench is available, tighten each nut/bolt to 75 foot-lbs. torque. The bolt head should be facing the front of vehicle being towed; the nut should face the rear of the vehicle being towed. Position the two C-shaped collars onto the mounted tow bar, making sure that they sit inside the respective tabs on each end. Insert the mounting pins through the front holes located on the tabs, as well as through the large hole on each collar. The mounting pins may be secured by inserting a clevis clip through the small holes located on the end of each pin.

Slowly drive the vehicle with the tow bar attached up to the rear of the towing vehicle. Try to center the towed vehicle so that the tow bar will be situated close to the ball hitch at the rear of the towing vehicle. Place the transmission in park, then set the parking brake. Lower the tow bar into position on top of the ball hitch.

Center the tow bar coupler over the ball hitch, then raise the coupler's locking lever. Next, push the coupler onto the hitch ball so that it grabs it completely. Lower the coupler's locking lever until the coupler is locked onto the hitch ball.
