How to Make Herb Ointment
Herbal ointments can be used in aromatherapy and for medicinal purposes. The ointment is concentrated, so when it is used, it is generally added to water to release its scent or healing properties. Remedies for all types of health concerns, including acne, burns, pains and illnesses can be addressed with herbs. Before making an herbal ointment, research the herbs you will be using, as some herbs are toxic, and others can be contraindicated in people with certain medical conditions. If you are on any medication, consult your physician before using herbal ointments.
Things You'll Need
- 2 ounces of dried herb
- 1 pint of any type of vegetable or nut oil
- Double boiler pot
- Wooden spoon
- Strainer
- Small glass bottles with lids
- Funnel
- 1 ounce of beeswax

Combine herbs with oil in a double boiler pot, making sure that the herbal ointment mixture does not touch any metal. It should be heated in the top half of the double boiler, away from the bottom pot, and stirred with a wooden spoon occasionally. Heat uncovered on a moderate temperature for about an hour.

Add beeswax to the strained herbal ointment as it heats to thicken the mixture. Add the whole ounce of beeswax all at once and stir it throughout the warm mixture, allowing it to melt. Stir the mixture occasionally, until all the wax is spread evenly throughout.

Strain the herb ointment mixture from the pot by placing the strainer over a bowl and pouring the mixture over and through the strainer and into the bowl. This process will remove large bits of herbs.

Pour the herb ointment in glass bottles using a funnel by placing the funnel in each glass bottle and using it to direct the ointment into the bottle. Seal the bottles tightly with a lid.
