How to Restore a Formica Countertop
Formica has a vintage look and feel, especially when used on a counter or table top. The problem is that Formica can also look old, dated and even shabby, particularly if the counter top has scratches or other signs of damage. Unlike marble or stone, which has color throughout the piece, Formica only has a pattern or design on the top while the interior is fairly plain. Scratches on the surface show the plain color underneath. When you restore your Formica counter top and remove those scratches, you make the counters look new again. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Clean the Formica counters with pure distilled white vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Both work equally well, but apple cider vinegar has a less abrasive scent. Wipe down the counters with a sponge dipped in vinegar to remove food particles and dust on the counter.

2
Apply an even layer of degreaser to the Formica counters. Rub the degreaser over the surface of the counter top and then wipe away with a damp sponge. Wipe the counter with a dry paper towel, making sure the counters are completely dry.

3
Mix the two-part epoxy paint according to the manufacturer's instructions. You typically need to combine equal amounts from two bottles or tubes, mixing with a toothpick. Dip a toothpick into the mixed epoxy and apply directly to any scratches or dings on the Formica. Wipe the excess epoxy away from the counters with a damp paper towel.

Wait 24 hours for the epoxy to dry completely or longer, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations. Apply additional layers of epoxy to the scratches, wiping off the excess each time. Continue adding more layers until the scratches seem to disappear and the epoxy is the same height as the surrounding Formica.

5
Sprinkle the Formica counters with baking soda. Add enough vinegar that the baking soda begins fizzing. Let the mixture sit on the counters for five minutes and then wipe away with a damp sponge. The combination removes yellow spots on the counters.
