How to Enable Extra Channels on a Wireless Adapter

When you configure your home wireless network, the wireless router is set to broadcast on a default frequency. Unfortunately, a number of other wireless devices (cordless telephones, microwaves, televisions, Bluetooth devices) are set to broadcast in this same range and can cause interference between your wireless adapter and wireless router. You can easily change the default channel and select any of the other available frequencies. In order to do so, you must access the router's firmware.

Instructions

Connect an Ethernet cable directly from your wireless router to your computer. Plug the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port.

    • 2

Open your Web browser and log into the wireless router. Most commonly the default log-in is "http://192.168.1.1" -- though it may vary depending on the router manufacturer. Refer to the included user guide. You may be asked for a login name and password. Again, the default depends on the router manufacturer; refer to the user guide.

    • 3

Navigate to "Wireless," then "Basic Wireless Settings."

    • 4

Open the "Wireless Channel" (or simply "Channel") drop-down menu. This is a list of all available wireless channels. You have the option of 12 channels. The default is typically "Channel 6." The different channels represent the different frequencies the wireless network is broadcast on. If you are experiencing interference with other wireless devices in your home, it is best to avoid Channel 6. Click "Save Settings" to save the new channel.
