How to Troubleshoot a Hayward Inline Chlorinator
Swimming pools require a sanitizing chemical to remove contaminants from the water held in the pool. A common sanitizing agent used in swimming pools is the chemical chlorine. Chlorine sanitizers are applied to pools in a variety of ways including shocks, tablets and chlorinators. Hayward inline chlorinators automatically inject chlorine into the pool water as it flows through the chlorinator body. Troubleshooting a Hayward inline chlorinator requires cleaning the chlorinator screen, chlorinator o-ring, and purging air from the pool lines. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Shut off water flow to the chlorinator by turning off the pump and filter system of the pool. Unscrew the lid of the Hayward chlorinator and remove it. Remove any tablets in the chlorinator using tongs. Reach into the chlorinator body and pull out the small black or grey screen connected to the bottom of the chlorinator. Spray the screen with water to clean any gunk or other debris off of it. Place any chlorine tablets and the screen back into the chlorinator.

2
Remove the rubber o-ring from the chlorinator lid. Examine the ring, looking for flat sides, cracks, or other breaks. If any of these conditions exist, a new o-ring is needed. Properly lubricate the o-ring with o-ring lubricant and place the o-ring back onto the chlorinator lid.

Screw the chlorinator lid onto the chlorinator body loosely so that air can freely escape. Start the pump and filter system of the pool. Wait until water begins to trickle out of the top of the chlorinator then finish screwing on the chlorinator lid. This purges air from the pool lines, ensuring the Hayward chlorinator does not become vapor or air locked.
