How to Change Water for a In-Home Oxygen Unit

How to Change Water for a In-Home Oxygen Unit thumbnail
Portable oxygen improves blood oxygen levels.

In-home supplemental oxygen is prescribed by a physician to improve your body's ability to deliver oxygen to your bloodstream. In-home oxygen is delivered through a concentrator that filters oxygen from room air and stores it in a reservoir. Supplemental oxygen may be used in the short term after a surgical procedure or illness, or long term with disease conditions that affect the respiratory system. You can use it full time or only during specific activities or certain times of the day. Humidifying oxygen units add water to the oxygen as it is delivered and reduce nasal dryness.

Instructions

    • 1

Change the water in your humidifier every day. Detach the water bottle from your concentrator and pour out the used water.

    • 2

Wash the water bottle with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.

    • 3

Fill the water bottle to the designated fill level with distilled or sterile water only. Do not use tap water as it contains minerals that may cause buildup within the concentrator.

    • 4

Re-attach the water bottle to the concentrator and resume use.
