Instructions

    • 1

Switch the electricity off in the area you are about to work. Find the breaker box and flick the circuit breaker switch. Use a volt meter to check that the power has been de-energized before you remove an old switch. Test in several places around the inside of the box. If no power is detected then proceed with the installation.

    • 2

Unscrew the switch plate and gently pull it out of the wall. Some Leviton dimmers have several colors in the pack. Select the color you wish to use, you can always change it in the future. Disconnect the wires from the old switch. Check which is the common wire, disconnect this last and reconnect to the new dimmer first, to ensure you have the correct wire. The common wire connects to a red wire, on the dimmer, which has a label attached.

    • 3

The Leviton dimmer may be used as single-pole or three-way. To wire up as a three-way you need to use the extra red wire with the label. Remove the label, twist the ends together tightly and use a wire-nut to terminate the connection.

    • 4

Connect the green (ground) wire on the Leviton dimmer to the wire in the wall box, which may also be unsheathed copper. Using pliers, straighten out the ground wire and twist to connect. Screw on a wire-nut to terminate. Connect the black (power) wire and the red (load) wire in the same way.

    • 5

Push the conductors and wires back into the junction box. Check that the dimmer is the right way up before screwing it into place. Restore the power and test that the dimmer works. Add the finishing plate by tightening the two screws at top and bottom.
