How to Clean the EGR in a Mazda Millenia
The Millenia is a luxury car that was designed and manufactured by Mazda. The Millenia has a component called the exhaust gas recirculation valve. The EGR valve works to reduce emissions. The valve directs exhaust into the intake manifold before entering the combustion chamber. The cooled exhaust mixed with the air-to-fuel mixture reduces emissions. If your EGR is damaged or dirty, your engine won't run as well. If you notice your Millenia running poorly or your "Check Engine" light appears, clean the EGR.

1
Park the Millenia and allow the vehicle and its components to cool for a half hour.

2
Open the hood of the vehicle. Locate the EGR valve. The EGR is found to the left of the battery on the right side of the intake manifold. The valve looks like a mushroom top with a hose coming out of the top and a wire electrical connector coming out from the side.

3
Unplug the hose from the top of the valve and place it to the side. Disconnect the electrical connector. Grasp the sides of the connector and pull straight out of the valve. There are two bolts securing the valve in place. Loosen and remove each bolt using a socket wrench. The valve is now loose enough to pull straight out of the vehicle. Depending on the amount of carbon buildup, some force may be required.

4
Spray carburetor cleaner on the EGR; make sure to get cleaner into all parts of the valve. Use a wire brush and rag to clean away all deposits and dirt. Spray carburetor cleaner onto the valve mount on the vehicle and wipe away any debris.
-
5
Place the valve back onto the valve mount. Replace each bolt and tighten using the socket wrench. Plug the hose into the valve; you will hear it click into place. Reconnect the electrical connector by pushing it into place. Once the electrical connector clicks, the valve is reinstalled and ready for use.
