How to Upgrade My Navigation System

How to Upgrade My Navigation System thumbnail
GPS devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

You can buy a portable Global Positioning System (GPS) unit for navigating the streets of your city and state, across the country and beyond. You may also purchase a car that has one of these navigation systems built in. Over time, the system can become outdated because of the lack of correct information and changes to the road system. When your GPS unit becomes outdated, you can upgrade your system to correct the errors.

Locate the make and model of your navigation system. If you have a portable system, you can find this information in your manual. If the system is built into your can, look for it in the car manual. The manual should also contain the contact information for purchasing updates.

Purchase upgrades---usually as downloads to your computer for a portable system or an update DVD for your car. Attach your GPS unit to your computer (generally via a USB cable that came with the unit) to download the updates you purchased. Alternatively, put the new DVD in your car's system and follow any specific directions given by the manufacturer.

Add an attachment. Some GPS systems have built-in functions for traffic monitoring and other tools, but some also require you to attach another piece of hardware. Connect the additional hardware to the port on the system with the cable that came with the hardware or by connecting it directly, depending on the system.
