The JPEG format is one of the most-used file formats for photography and home image printing. JPEG compression in the Nikon D7000 DSLR camera is a setting that allows you to control the storage size of the file, or its megabyte size. There are two selections on the "JPEG compression" menu. They are "Size priority" and "Optimal quality." Each compresses the JPEG file in a different way.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the camera and press the "Menu" button on the back. Select the "Shooting menu" and scroll down until you find the "JPEG compression" selection.

    • 2

Scroll to the right when you have highlighted "JPEG compression" and you will see the two types of compression in a list format. Select either "Size priority" or "Optimal quality."

    • 3

Press the "OK" button to lock in the JPEG compression level for the images you will now take. You can modify this setting any time you want to use the other type of JPEG compression, by returning to the "Shooting menu."

Tips & Warnings

  • It is important to understand that each JPEG image has a different level of detail within. For instance, if you are taking a beautiful landscape picture of a lovely forest scene, the image has lots of leaves and branches (high detail). Compare that to a picture of a person standing against a blank wall (low detail). The picture with low detail will compress much more efficiently than the picture with high detail because there are fewer things in the picture to compress. Size priority is designed to squeeze all your image files to a certain predetermined file size. Each image taken under size priority will have a different level of compression according to the level of detail. Therefore, a high-detail picture must be compressed much more than a low-detail picture. Picture quality will vary when you use size priority because of more or less compression, but the file size will remain relatively constant. If your concern is for maximum quality, you may be better served by using the optimal quality setting instead. Optimal quality mode tells the camera to use a single level of compression so that the picture will have maximum quality. The file size of the image is allowed to vary in order to keep the image quality constant. Using JPEG compression is easy if you follow a few simple steps.
