How to Respond to an Objective Statement

How to Respond to an Objective Statement thumbnail
The objective statement is an important part of a resume.

An objective statement is included in a resume to describe to the potential employer what the individual wants to achieve professionally. There are simple rules in writing a strong objective statement that will both convey the individual's goals, as well as make the resume stand out from the others.

Instructions

    • 1

Write in the third person. Avoid writing things like, "I am applying for"; instead, write statements like, "Seeking full time work in the legal field." Keep the statement to a four- or five-sentence minimum, but no more than a short paragraph; some objective statements include only one to two sentences.

    • 2

Explain what type of work you are looking for clearly within the objective statement. Avoid an explanation of what you are applying for in the objective statement. Instead, include this in your cover letter.

    • 3

Include information about your current work, skills, knowledge and experience. Keep in mind that most of this will also be organized throughout the body of the resume, so don't get too wordy with this. Include why you want to join the organization.
