Many cities have been replacing metal halide traffic lights with LED bulbs, but there is some debate over whether the cost of replacement is equivalent to any savings. In some applications it makes sense, but in others, it may not. Replacing a 400-watt metal halide bulb is a simple task. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find LED bulbs that produce a higher lumens per watt than the metal halide bulbs that you are using. Metal halide bulbs range between 65 and 115 lumens per watt. LED bulbs range between 60 and 135 lumens per watt. You also want to ensure that the shape and size of the fixture fit in your metal halide lamps. Generally, the LED bulbs that work best are listed as metal halide replacements.

    • 2

Remove your 400-watt metal halide bulbs from their lamps.

    • 3

Screw the new LED bulbs into the lamps you used for your metal halide bulbs, and enjoy your energy savings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have your work space evaluated by a lighting specialist to determine not only the number of lumens your bulbs are producing and what you need to replace but also the number of foot candles illuminating the work space.

  • Some LED bulbs might not give you as much return as others. Be sure the lumens of the replacement bulbs will be at least as bright as the 400-watt metal halide bulb you are replacing.
