Keep electric lights glowing in a power outage with a generator.

A home generator can provide electricity to run appliances and lights in the event of a power outage, and can be used as a power source while camping. The Coleman 5000 Powermate Generator is a heavy duty gas-powered unit that can produce 11 hours of power from 6 gallons of fuel. Using a Coleman 5000 Generator is simple, but it's vital that the unit is used properly to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place the generator outdoors, away from open windows, vents and doors. If the weather is wet, cover the generator with an open canopy for protection.

    • 2

Check the oil and fuel levels and fill if necessary. Make sure nothing is plugged into the generator before starting.

    • 3

Close the choke. Switch the generator on.

    • 4

Turn the key to start the engine. Allow the engine to warm up, adjusting the choke as needed.

    • 5

Plug in the 25-foot convenience cord to bring power inside, or plug items directly into the generator's 120-volt outlets.

    • 6

Unplug all cords from the generator and shut down to refuel.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the generator shuts off spontaneously, check the oil. The Coleman Powermate has a low oil shutdown feature to protect the engine.

  • Never run your generator indoors, even inside an open garage.

  • Never refuel the engine while it's running or hot.

  • Never plug the generator into a wall outlet in an attempt to power the house. Doing so can cause electrocution to utility workers servicing the transformer, as well as neighbors who share your transformer.
