How to Change the Fuel Pump on My 2000 Blazer
The fuel pump in a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer is located in the fuel tank. When the fuel pump burns out, you will need to drop the tank so you can pull out the fuel pump. Replacing the fuel pump should include replacing the fuel filter so the fuel system will be fresh. It will take some time to replace the fuel pump, as there are many small steps involved, but the money saved will make it more than worth it.
Things You'll Need
- Jack
- Jack stands
- Socket wrench
- Socket set
- Flat-tip screwdriver
- Punch
- Hammer
Instructions
-
-
1
Ensure the Blazer is parked on a flat, level surface. Set the parking brake.
-
2
Place a jack under the differential in the back and raise the truck high enough to place jack stands under the axle. Lower the truck onto the jack stands.
-
-
3
Locate the gas tank under the rear of the SUV. The gas tank is held up by two metal straps. Place the jack directly under the gas tank. Unbolt the two straps and allow the tank to fall on the jack. Do not lower it to the ground yet.
-
4
Disconnect all the wiring and hoses that are connected to the top of the fuel tank. Locate the fuel filler hose in the back of the tank. Disconnect the hose off the back of the tank by loosening the hose clamp with a flat-tip screwdriver. Pull the hose off the tank.
-
5
Allow the tank to drop onto the jack. Slide the tank out from underneath the truck.
-
6
Open the retaining ring at the top of the tank with a punch and a hammer. Push the retaining ring counterclockwise by tapping the punch with the hammer. Once the retaining ring is loose, you can remove it by hand.
-
7
Replace the O-ring at the bottom of the threads by hand. This will ensure the gas does not leak from the tank when it is filled up.
-
8
Pull the pump out of the tank by hand. The fuel pump is sold as a whole assembly including the pump, strainer and sending unit.
-
9
Insert the new assembly into the fuel tank. Place the assembly in at an angle so the sending unit does not get bent.
-
10
Thread the retaining ring over the pump assembly to secure it in place. Tighten the ring with a hammer and punch to ensure the ring is tight.
-
11
Place the tank on the jack. Slide both under the truck where the gas tank is supposed to be mounted. Raise the tank high enough to connect the wiring and hoses. Connect the wiring connectors to the connectors at the top of the fuel tank. Push the vacuum lines and fuel lines to the tank.
-
12
Connect the fuel filler hose at the back of the tank. Tighten the hose clamp to secure the hose to the tank with a flat-tip screwdriver.
-
13
Raise the fuel tank all the way up to the truck. Tighten the two straps with a socket wrench.
-
14
Raise the truck high enough to remove the jack stands. Lower the truck to the ground.
-
15
Pour gasoline into the fuel tank. Ensure there is fuel in the tank.
-
16
Start the truck and allow it to idle for five minutes. The truck may not start right away. Turn the key to the "Start" position and allow the fuel pump to run for three seconds. The fuel pump will prime the fuel line and allow the truck to start.
-
17
Allow the truck to idle for five minutes. Inspect around the fuel tank for leaks. Shut the truck off when done.

Tips & Warnings
You can purchase a syphon hose to drain the gas tank, if needed.
Use caution working under the truck. Chock the front wheels to ensure the truck does not roll forward while it is raised.
Use caution working around gasoline, as it is highly toxic and flammable.
