How to Finish Out Cabinets

After you install a set of cabinets onto a wall, you may find that the configuration has an unfinished look to it, as if the cabinets aren't really part of the room. Finishing out the installation with some trim will solve that. Quarter-round is three-sided molding with two flat sides and one curved side, so it can tuck into long corners with the curve facing outward, visually spanning the two surfaces. By installing quarter-round where the cabinets meet the walls, you tie it all together. Finish the trim to match the other trim in the room. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the vertical edge of the cabinet where it meets the wall. Transfer the measurement to a strip of quarter-round molding, using a pencil to put two marks -- one about 3 inches from one end of the piece, and the second measured off from that first one.

    • 2

Lay the quarter-round on your miter saw, positioned so the curved side of the piece is facing outward and the two flat sides are running along the horizontal platform and the vertical fence. Put one mark in front of the blade.

    • 3

Turn the blade to 45 degrees pointing away from the measured span of the molding. Make the cut.

    • 4

Slide the molding so the other mark is in front of the blade. Turn the blade 45 degrees in the other direction (so it's again pointing away from the measured span). Make the cut.

    • 5

Set the molding along the side of the cabinet where it meets the wall, with the two flat sides against the wall and the cabinet, and the curved side facing outward. The angled ends should point outward from the upper and lower ends of the cabinet.

    • 6

Shoot finish nails through the molding every 10 inches or so into the wall to secure it.

    • 7

Repeat the process for each side of the cabinet. Install the quarter-round pieces so they completely surround the cabinet where it meets the wall, with the mitered ends of the molding meeting to form the corners.
