How to Save a Company's Money With Different Ideas

Creative thinking can save a business a lot of money.

Cost cutting can make the difference between success and failure for a business, particularly during tough economic times. Using only one cost cutting measure usually won't help much; a company needs to instill a culture of frugality and awareness to make a big difference in waste. If enough employees and managers can be trained to think in this way, it will eventually become second nature. The results will show in the account books and in the decreased environmental impact of the business.

Save power and money by turning off all lights and equipment that aren't being used. While this idea seems self-evident, many people and companies ignore it, leaving banks of lights and computers on all night long. Build awareness of electricity use in your company by purchasing meters that plug into a standard wall outlet and show how much power is being used. With this graphic depiction of usage, it's easy and even fun to reduce the amount you use. You can even encourage competitions between departments to see who uses the least electricity.

Develop a program to encourage employees to work from home. If your company is primarily involved in computer-based conceptual work (insurance, editing, investing, etc.), many of your employees could probably do their work from home. You could eventually have enough people working from home that you could shut down part of your office space, leading to major savings in rent or mortgage, insurance, taxes and utilities.

Go green and cut down on power use and waste. Reducing waste involves some visionary thinking, and often up-front investment, but in the long term it can increase a company's public profile, decrease its environmental impact, and save huge amounts of money, thus increasing its profit margins.

Use free methods of publicity and advertising to save on your promotion budget. Create videos about what your company does to post for free on YouTube. Develop pages on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites to promote your corporate vision. Invite the media to do stories on your business; this costs a lot less than placing ads. Listening, viewing and reading audiences are generally more receptive to news stories and documentaries than they are to advertisements.
