How to Use a Flag on a Mailbox
The mailbox signal flag alerts postal carriers of outgoing mail. Most curbside mailboxes have signal flags. The flag is located on the right side, as you face it, of the mailbox. According to the federal standards for curbside mailboxes, florescent orange is the preferred color. With some exceptions, other colors may be used as long as they are a distinctive contrast to the mailbox. Flags in shades of green, white, yellow, blue or brown do not meet federal postal standards.
