Corvette Targa Top Instructions

The Corvette is a sports car produced by Chevrolet. Debuting in the 1950s, the Corvette has been through numerous changes and upgrades. Beginning in the 1980s with the C4 Corvette, Chevrolet introduced a one-piece targa top that the driver can remove and store in the rear hatch area. This gives the Corvette a sportier semi-convertible look. Although not difficult, because of its weight and size you may need some assistance from a friend to remove the targa top.

Targa Definition

A targa is a type of vehicle roof where the roof panel is removable, making it a popular choice for convertibles.

Removal

Park your Corvette on a flat surface and lower both windows. Shut off the engine and engage the emergency brake.

Open the hatch and clear any items in the area so that you can store the targa top in the hatch.

Lower both sun visors and locate the release latches on the front corner of the targa top, behind the sun visors. Pull both release latches outward (toward the outside of the car) to unlock the front of the targa top.

Locate the release hatch on the back of the targa top, along the center rear edge of the top. Press the back side of the release latch to unlock the handle then press the front button on the front of the release latch to engage the handle. Pull the handle downward to unlock the rear of the targa top.

Stand on the driver's or passenger's side of the Corvette and firmly grasp the targa top along the side edge. Pull the target top forward and upward simultaneously. Lift off the targa top to remove it.

Insert the targa top in the rear hatch, lining up the outside front edges of the top with the floor latches near the front of the hatch. Line up the pins on the back of the targa top with the connectors in the rear of the hatch and press down on the back of the targa top to lock it in place.

Installation

Park your Corvette on a flat surface and lower both windows. Shut off the engine and engage the emergency brake.

Lower both sun visors and pull all three release latches so they are in the "Open" position. Note there are two release latches in the front (one below each sun visor) and one release latch in the rear.

Open the hatch and pull the targa top up and back to remove it from the locking mechanism in the hatch.

Place the targa top over the top of the Corvette, lining up the back edge of the targa with the back of the roof opening so that the pins in the targa top fit into the openings in the rear overhead weatherstripping.

Lower the front of the targa top until it contacts the top edge of the windshield.

Press upward on the rear latch handle until closed.

Grasp the front release handles and pull them inward until closed.

Tug on the targa top gently to ensure it secures properly and does not move.

Tips

Have a partner stand on the opposite side of the Corvette and help you lift off the targa top.
