1
Create a business name and apply for a tax ID number with the IRS (see "Resources"). To get a tax ID, visit the IRS website and apply online. All you need to begin is a business name and some basic information about yourself and your company. Most software companies will only sell their software at a wholesale price if you have a tax ID. The tax ID will not only allow you to purchase software at wholesale, which is important of you want to make a profit, but also allows you to purchase the products for resale without paying sales tax.

2
Make a list of the type of software you want to sell. You may want to sell a variety of types of software or you may prefer to specialize in a specific type, such as games, productivity software or utility software. While a wide variety may give you access to a wider base of customers, a niche market can be the perfect way to secure steady or repeat customers.

Secure a Web hosting service to build a website. Look for a Web hosting service that will register a domain name (such as www.yourcompnay.com) for you. Avoid free Web hosting, as these Web hosts will place ads on your website to help pay for the free service. These ads can make your website look unprofessional and will detract from the products you're selling. Look for a Web host that has built-in shopping cart capability so you can accept online payments. Use your website to display screenshots of software and be sure to list all the details provided by the software's manufacturer.

Contact the software companies whose product you want to sell. Many of the companies have a link for resellers. If not, contact customer service with your request for wholesale pricing. Be sure to ask about purchase requirements. Many of the larger software companies will want you to commit to a large upfront purchase. If your budget is limited, you may want to avoid these companies and start with smaller software companies until you've added product to your website and begin making some money.
