How to Edit a Cell

Users of Microsoft Excel will find that one of the most common tasks is editing cells. The data content of cells may be edited within the cell itself or in the software's formula bar. Besides changing data, Microsoft Excel users often need to change other features such as column width, cell and text color, alignment and font size.

      Double-click on the cell you wish to edit or click on the cell once, then click on the formula bar, which is located directly above the spreadsheet under the taskbar. Press "backspace" to delete a portion of the contents of the cell or highlight the contents of the cell and press "delete." Type the new information into the cell.

      Click on your keyboard's "ESC" button to undo any changes that were made if you determine you do not want to edit the cell after all. Proceed with the edits by hitting the "Enter" or "Tab" button to finish editing the cell.

      Click on the "Microsoft Office Button" located in the upper left corner of the program. Scroll down and click on "Save" to save your edits.

      Click on the cell in which you wish to edit the column width. Choose the "Home" tab in the Excel toolbar. Click on "Format," which is located in the "Cells" section. Scroll to "AutoFit Column Width" to make the cell the exact size of the data contained within it. Choose "Column Width" if you would like to specify a different size.

      Click on the cell in which you wish to autowrap the text. Click on "AutoWrap," which is located in the Alignment section of the Home tab.

      Click on the cell in which you wish to edit the color. Choose the "Home" tab in the Excel toolbar. Find the paint can icon located in the Fonts section and click on the arrow. Choose a color for the cell. Click on the "A" next to the paint can to edit the color of the text within the cell.

      Click on the cell in which you wish to edit the text font and size. In the Font section of the Home tab, choose your font preference from the scroll-down menu. Click on the number beside the fonts to set the size of the text.
