How to Stop a Scab From Scarring

A scab forms to help the body heal from a cut. It protects the area from dirt and bacteria which can make the injury worse. However, scabs can lead to scars. Prevent a scab from forming by helping the wound heal quickly and on its own. This way you won't be tempted to pick at the scabs and it won't have a chance to scar.

Things You'll Need

• Medicated antiseptic gel
• Gauze pad
• Athletic tape

Instructions

1. Use medicated antiseptic gels that help wounds heal. These help the skin around the scab heal more quickly and help prevent scabs from forming if applied immediately. The antiseptic gel keeps the area clean and the skin moist so that it retains its elastic properties.

2. Stop picking at the scab. When you do this, the newly formed skin gets ripped off and has to heal again. The more you tear off and pick at the scabs, the more likely it is that you will have a scar.

3. Place a patch over the scab if you can not stop picking at it. Some people have obsessive disorders which cause them to pick at things, which will cause scarring. Tape a gauze pad over the scab using athletic tape. The gauze allows the wound to get air the the healing process can continue, but it keeps you from picking at it.
