How to Install a Wheel Adapter

A wheel adapter is used to change the bolt pattern of a wheel on your vehicle, and to expand the width of the wheel. This allows you to customize your vehicle by using wheels and tires that require more studs than your existing wheels. Installing a wheel adapter is accomplished by using the same process that you'd use to remove a wheel, as if you were rotating the tires. This means that you can use wheel adapters during the summer and remove them when the season changes.

Instructions

    • 1

Place jack stands under the frame on one side of the vehicle, near the front and rear tires. Consult your owner's manual for the proper, safe place to position the jacks for your make and model.

    • 2

Lower the car jack until the vehicle is resting on the jack stands.

    • 3

Remove the lug nuts from one wheel, using an air gun or a lug wrench. Repeat this process on the other wheel.

    • 4

Take the wheels off and set them aside.

    • 5

Place a wheel adapter over the studs on the wheel. Hand-tighten a lug nut on each stud. Tighten the lug nuts using the air gun or lug wrench.

    • 6

Place one of your customized wheels over the studs and the wheel adapter. Hand-tighten the lug nuts on each stud, using the air gun or lug wrench. Repeat this step for the other wheel adapter.

    • 7

Raise the vehicle up and remove the jack stands from under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle back to the ground.

    • 8

Repeat this process for the other two wheels.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wheel adapters can have the same amount or additional studs, depending on the type of wheel that you want to use on your vehicle.
