The IEC 320 is a common female connector on household power cords.

International Electrotechnical Commission, or IEC, is the generic name assigned to many power cord connection types. The IEC 320 is the assignment given to a three-wire grounded female appliance-side connector. Key features of the connector are three vertical female spades, one each for hot, neutral, and ground. Wiring an IEC 320 connector is at the core of power cord repair, since many appliances and pieces of home electronics are equipped with an IEC 320 inlet connector on the chassis. Instructions

    • 1

Pull apart by hand the white, green, and black conductors inside the power cord, so that they are no longer twisted. Twist together the individual wire strands within each conductor to assist with insertion into the IEC's internal connectors.

    • 2

Unscrew the IEC connector's shell into two halves using the Philips screwdriver. Slide the connector containing the metal clamp terminals over the wire.

    • 3

Slide the white neutral wire into the "-" clamp, the black hot lead into the "+" terminal, and the green ground into the slot labeled with three hash marks. Follow the IEC connector's wiring labels as a guide for wire insertion. Tighten the screws on the sides of the clamps using the Philips screwdriver.

    • 4

Snap the IEC connector's cover onto the lower half of the shell. Screw the two halves together with the Philips screws and screwdriver.
