How to Clear an ARP Table

The ARP, or Address Resolution Protocol, essentially connects the physical address or identity of your computer's network card to an IP address so that you can connect to your network and the Internet. Your computer stores the entries that the ARP creates in an organized table known as the ARP cache. Occasionally, the ARP cache becomes corrupt and is responsible for failed connections to Web pages when you try to connect. In these instances, you can clear the ARP table or cache to troubleshoot the issue, which basically resets any communication attempts from your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click the "Start" button.

    • 2

Go into the "All Programs" list, select "Accessories" and click on "Command Prompt."

    • 3

      Type the following line:

      netsh interface ip delete arpcache

      Press "Enter."

    • 4

Wait for the "Ok" message to appear after the ARP table is cleared. Close the Windows Command Prompt.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can type "arp -a" and press "Enter" in your command prompt if you wish to see the ARP cache before you clear it.
