How to Change 110 Volt to 12 Volt

You can use an AC adatper to convert 110 volts to 12 volts.

To run a 12 volt direct current (DC) device on a 110 volt alternating current (AC) system, you will need an AC adapter or power supply specific to the device you wish to run. Common 12 volt devices include computers and most devices you would plug into an automobile's cigarette lighter. Although using an adapter is simple enough, choosing the correct one can sometimes be challenging.

1. Verify via your device's manual that it indeed requires 12 volts and determine the required minimum amps and tip polarity. The device may list wattage instead of amps.

2. Assess the tip requirements for the device. The tip may vary according to size and shape, so make sure your new adapter has the correctly sized connection.

3. Purchase an appropriate 12 volt adapter that corresponds to the requirements of your device. You can also purchase a multiple voltage adapter that is designed to run several devices, but make sure 12 volts is one of the options.

4. Select the voltage as 12 volts, if the device has a selector switch for voltage. If you are using a single voltage adapter, then you will not have to make a selection.

5. Turn the power on, if applicable. Some adapters have built-in toggle switches to sever the power at the adapter.

6. Plug the device into the adapter to power it.
