Wine Bag Instructions
Wine bags are shaped to fit wine bottles. They can be used for many purposes, including storing and carrying. Wine bags can also be a great addition to a bottle of wine given as a gift: add a custom wine bag to your gift to make it instantly personalized and long-lasting. Simple wine bags are also useful when hosting a blind tasting; an uncomplicated bag, tied with a drawstring, safely hides the wine's identity without forcing you to deal with the hassle of removing the label. Making a wine bag is as simple or complex as you want. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Choose a pattern for your wine bag. These can be simple or complicated depending on your needs and level of ambition. For the simplest wine bag, created from a rectangle of fabric, you do not even need to use a pattern; just use the wine bottle as a "form" to verify your measurements and the drape of your bag (which can be baggy or snug, as you desire).
-
2
Fold your piece of fabric in half along the short side. The side with the fold should be the 8-inch side; the right sides of the fabric should be facing each other. Pin the fabric together, making sure the sides are even. As you do so, you may test the drape of the bag by carefully placing the wine bottle inside the rough bag you have created with the pinned fabric. Mark where you want your seam to be; the bottle should be able to slide easily in and out of the bag. You may choose to have a looser drape for thicker fabric and a more snug fit for thin or soft fabric.

3
Sew up the two long sides of the bag using the sewing machine. You should now have a rectangle of fabric, 8-by-15 inches, with three sides sewn shut and one (short) side open. The right sides of the fabric should still be facing one another, with the wrong side facing towards you.
-
4
Fold down the top edge of the bag, again testing it on your wine bottle. You will be running elastic through this loop, so choose how low on the wine bottle you want the bag to sit and fold the fabric down accordingly.
-
5
Sew a straight stitch around the top of the bag along the bottom edge of the folded fabric. As you circumvent the bag, stop sewing just before you reach the beginning of your stitching. You should now have an empty pocket at the top of your bag.
-
6
Put the safety pin in one end of the elastic. Using the safety pin to guide the elastic, thread the elastic through the pocket, making sure that you hold on tight to the other end of the elastic. Once you have threaded the elastic, sew the two ends together and release it into the pocket. Hand-stitch the small hole that you had left open to run the elastic through.
-
7
Embellish the bag as you see fit with ribbon, lace, buttons or pins. For an additional touch, use ribbon instead of elastic and leave two long ends hanging out of the pocket; use these to tie the bag tight around the bottle's neck.
