Oftentimes a car owner will want to bypass a transponder in a car for various reasons, some of which include having lost an expensive-to-replace transponder key or wanting to install a remote starter. Honda cars have a typical transponder relay that emits a signal to the key, receives the pass code from the transponder in the key and then sends a signal to car's ignition that it's OK to start. Bypassing on your own requires a good familiarity with electrical wiring. You can make the job easier, however, by obtaining a model-specific transponder bypass, which can be found at any local auto parts store.

Step 1

Purchase a transponder bypass kit from your local auto parts store. There are specific kits for both Hondas and universal ones that will fit any car. Choose the one that best fits your price range and fits your needs. There are universal bypass kits for general use and those specifically designed for those who wish to install a remote starter.

Step 2

Follow the installation instructions matching the color-coded wires to each corresponding ones in the car.

Step 3

Test your transponder bypass by starting the car with an ordinary key for your car. If it does not work, consult the manufacturer or an automotive locksmith, who will be able to instruct you better than the dealership in wiring a bypass kit.

Simple Bypass

Step 1

Take the head off of your transponder key by pulling it gently in the opposite direction of the key's blade. You may need a pair of pliers to loosen the head of the key away from the blade. Be sure to grab the key where the head meets the base of the key head so you will not crush the transponder, which is a small glass tube.

Step 2

Mount the key's head with either velcro or hot glue underneath the steering column as near to the ignition as you can get it without its being readily visible from above.

Step 3

Start the car with the key as you normally would. The transponder should give the proper signal to the transponder in your ignition and allow the car to start. You can now obtain copies for your key from any regular hardware store.
