Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Moving Companies
  1. Step 1

Discuss possible delivery dates with your moving company before the move begins, and agree in writing that your goods will be delivered within a specific period of several consecutive days.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the mover's bill of lading shows the correct delivery address and your contact information while you're in transit to your new home.

  3. Step 3

Give the mover a written copy of your travel plans, a delivery address and a phone contact at your destination.

  4. Step 4

Obtain the phone number of the moving agent at your destination before you leave your old residence.

  5. Step 5

Call the moving agent when you arrive at your destination and provide him with your contact address and phone number to arrange for delivery of your household goods.

  6. Step 6

Arrange to make payment for the move with cash, check or money order so you can pay the driver when the moving van arrives at your new residence, as required by federal regulations - unless you've paid in advance or your employer has paid the costs of your moving expenses.

Tips & Warnings
  • Agree to a delivery date within a time span of several consecutive days to give you and the mover some flexibility in case of unforeseen changes or delays in travel plans.
  • If the driver can't contact you at your destination, your shipment may be placed in storage until you can be located to arrange delivery of your household goods.
