How to Remove an Oil Filter Adapter

An oil filter adapter houses aftermarket components for the oil system, such as an oil temperature gauge and an oil pressure gauge. If you are having issues with the adapter or any of the add-on components attached to it, you may need to remove it for an inspection. Because the oil filter is attached to the oil filter adapter, removing the oil filter adapter is a process very similar to changing an oil filter.

Things You'll Need

• Vehicle jack and tire iron
• 2 jack stands
• Oil pan
• Soap and water
• Towel
• Oil filter wrench
• Crescent wrench or socket wrench set

Instructions

1. Raise the front end of your vehicle off the ground with a jack, tire iron and two jack stands.

2. Drain the motor oil into an oil pan. Clean any spillage on your hands with a towel and soap and water.

3. Remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench.

4. Remove the oil filter adapter with a crescent wrench or socket wrench set. Seat the jaws of the wrench on the base of the adapter. Turn counterclockwise to loosen.
