How to Tow an FJ Cruiser

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is an SUV that has been in production since 2006. When the vehicle breaks down and needs to be towed, knowing how to properly tow it can prevent expensive damage to the transfer case and transmission. The FJ Cruiser cannot be flat towed because the transfer case is unable to get enough lubrication. In order to safely tow the vehicle, you should load it onto a flatbed tow vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Back a flatbed tow truck up to the front of the FJ Cruiser with enough space between the vehicles to lower the flatbed into position.

    • 2

Lower the flatbed until it reaches the ground just in front of the FJ Cruiser.

    • 3

Attach the flatbed winch to the tow supports if the tow truck is behind the Toyota or to the center of the frame if the tow truck is in front of it. Place the FJ Cruiser's transmission in neutral and slowly pull the vehicle onto the back of the tow truck.

    • 4

Return the flatbed back to the original position. Set the parking brake on the FJ Cruiser. Chain or strap the SUV to the flatbed as per the instructions in the tow truck's owner's manual.
