Homemade Motorcycle Exhaust Baffles
Motorcycle exhaust systems are of similar concept to those of a vehicle's where the exhaust pipe carries the gas through the muffler and out into the atmosphere. However, unlike vehicles, some motorcycle owners remove the bike's mufflers in order to rev faster or allow the bike to make louder noises. Although this can be an interesting effect, removing the muffler leaves nothing for the exhaust gases to pass through and makes the bike very loud. Baffles aid in reducing sound levels of exhaust and in the build-up of back pressure. You can add homemade baffles to an exhaust system to deaden sound. They're simple to make and are cost efficient.

Locate the exhaust pipes on the bike. Mount about 1 inch of a shelving bracket into a vise and grab the other end with pliers for support.

Bend each shelving bracket individually with the vise to approximately 90 degrees. Use the drill to make one hole into the end of each shelving bracket that was inserted into the vise.

Use the drill to make two additional holes in the exhaust pipe approximately 6 inches from the end of the pipe.

Use the pliers to insert the edge of the bracket into the exhaust pipe until the drilled holes are aligned. Use the metal screws to attach the bracket to the vise and secure it into place. Repeat the same procedure for the second bracket.

Repeat steps 1-4 for each exhaust pipe, depending on how many pipes there are.

Tips & Warnings
Most bikes have one or two exhaust pipes, although some have more than two.
Use two brackets per pipe.
Each state has separate emission and sound regulations; therefore, check local and state laws for modification of exhaust systems on motorcycles before proceeding with modifications.
