How to Build a Simple Robot Without a Kit
Building a robot may seem like a daunting task. However, it is fairly simple to execute a basic, cheap robot with a few methodical steps. When crafting a robot, focus on making the project as simple as possible; especially if you are a novice. A robot with advanced functions can be programmed to get your newspaper and dinner, but it is best to start off with a controllable design at first.

1
Look for components you may have available in your home. Check your garage, attic and toy chests to see if you have any of the necessary parts needed to build a cheap robot. A radio-controlled car is a good example of something you may have already.
-
2
Take two pieces of Velcro and glue them to the top and bottom of the main piece of your robot. Make sure this is away from the perimeter where the wheels will be located.

3
Set a nickel cadmium battery on the bottom of the base and glue it to the piece of Velcro.
-
4
Attach the receiver on top of the robot's base using another piece of Velcro. A receiver and controller combination that is between 4- and 6-way is necessary. This is the degree of movement that your robot achieves via remote control.
-
5
Fasten your servos to the wheel base with dual-lock tape. This powers your robot, so use a dual setup with two servos attached at opposite sides of the wheel base.
-
6
Wire the battery and servos to the receiver. The receiver has channels on the end where the wires run from the servos. Be sure the two servos are attached side by side in the channels of the receiver. Check to see if the battery is attached to the receiver on the opposite end of the servos.

7
Clean up any loose or excess wires. Use a tie to keep them from showing at your robot's base.
