Check that you meet the eligibility requirements. This is a combination of education and experience, and there are routes tailored to people who have an abundance of either one. You can either apply with a four-year degree and three years project management experience (including 4,500 hours leading and managing projects, and 35 contact hours of education), or with a high school diploma and five years' experience in project management (7,500 hours leading projects and 35 contact hours of project management education).

2
Get a copy of the application form. These are available from the Project Management Institute's (PMI) website (see the link in Resources below). You can fill out the application online or print out a paper copy. If you fill out the application online, your application is processed in half the time (five business days as opposed to 10 for paper applications). You have 90 days to complete the application.

3
Fill out the application form. The form requests details of your experience in project management, and specifically the projects that you have managed yourself. If you've worked on two overlapping projects in one month, unfortunately this only counts as one month's worth of experience. However, if you managed two projects simultaneously, you can add the hours spent on each to the hours worked category.
-
4
Include full details of your education in the relevant field. The application requires you to detail all of the hours you were face-to-face with a teacher or a lecturer, and that were relevant to the field of project management. The recorded hours have to include information on things like project scope, quality and procurement.
-
5
Submit the application either online or in the post, and submit the required payment after you receive the "Application Completeness Review" email. You will then become eligible to take the multiple-choice exam. You must complete this within one year of your application being approved, and you can have up to three attempts.
-
6
Prepare for the exam using any relevant study materials. There are many websites online that offer help with the PMP test, and books released to help you in your study, such as Head First PMP, PMP Exam Prep and the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide.
-
7
Go to your scheduled exam location. The exam is made up of 200 multiple choice questions, and you are given four hours to complete it. After you have passed the test, you will be awarded your PMP certification.
