How to Organize a Construction Cleanup Service

How to Organize a Construction Cleanup Service thumbnail
Debris cleanup is essential to completion of construction projects.

Hiring a specialized crew to clean up construction sites allows construction workers more time to do what they were hired to do. Cleanup consists not only of removing debris from the outside of the property, but from the inside as well. Whether the debris is placed in a construction trash bin or hauled away by truck, it must be done. Construction cleanup is an ideal husband and wife business.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate how many people you will need on your crew and if you will have to hire other crew members. Family members or other acquaintances can be hired on an hourly basis or by the job. Set the pay schedule for crew members so they will know what they are being paid and when they will be paid.

Hiring employees who are familiar with the building and construction industry is good but not essential. Many of these tasks can be done by unskilled workers.

    • 2

Register your business with any local authorities or government agencies that are required. Choose and register your company name. Determine whether you need OSHA clearance or testing to ensure you are in complete compliance with federal and state laws.

You are not required to have workers' compensation insurance if you have subcontractors rather than employees. A general liability insurance policy should be sufficient.

    • 3

Create business cards, a letter of introduction and brochures or sales fliers. Distribute these to construction companies and builders.

    • 4

Create a contract that states explicitly what your crew will do, how they will do it and the time frame. Have the construction company owner sign the contract and keep a copy in your files.

    • 5

Purchase an ample supply of yard tools such as rakes and shovels. Cleaning supplies such as brooms, mops, trash bags, and cleaning buckets will be needed for inside cleaning. Shop towels, rags and the other supplies can be purchased at all home-improvement stores.

Add a chainsaw and other heavier equipment in the future when you are more established. Heavy equipment items can also be rented as needed.
