How to Paint Stripes in Different Finishes on a Wall
Painting stripes can add interest to your interior paint jobs, but for some, stripes of different colors are too busy or distracting. In this case, paint stripes in different finishes such as matte or shiny to create subtle stripes. Purchase the finishes in the same color to create these subtle stripes. Does this Spark an idea?

Clean the wall thoroughly with window cleaner and clean cloths. This will remove any excess dust that might contaminate your painted wall. Let the wall dry thoroughly.

Lay a drop cloth on the floor and tape it to the floor's edges to help keep the paint from seeping onto your floor.

Dip a paintbrush into the either the matte or the glossy paint and wipe both edges along the lip of the paint can. Paint the corners on the wall and paint around windows, trim and baseboards.

Pour paint into the trough of a paint tray.

Dip a paint roller into the trough and roll it over the paint tray to remove as much of the paint as possible.

Roll the paint onto the wall in a "W" shape. Fill in the spaces around the W on the wall. Reapply paint to the roller as needed. Paint all the walls.

Let the paint dry completely. Paint will be dry when it is no longer sticky or tacky.

Measure and mark the position of the stripes on the wall according to your preference. Measure and mark opposite sides or ends -- whether you want horizontal or vertical stripes -- of the wall so that the stripes will be even and level.

Lay the painter's tape from the first mark to the mark on the opposite side or end of the wall. Repeat with the other lines on the wall.

Place a level on the painter's tape and adjust it if it is not level.

Dip a paintbrush into matte paint if you used glossy paint on the wall or glossy paint if you used matte paint on the wall. Wipe both edges of the paintbrush on the lip of the paint can.

Paint the stripe on the wall.

Peel off the tape when the paint is tacky but is no longer wet.

Let the paint dry completely.
