As an extra, you can get a taste of the movie business.

Anytime a movie is in production, the casting director for the project will be looking for extras. A role as an extra may seem insignificant. However, extras are used to fill the background and often the foreground of a movie scene. As an extra, you are not required to speak. Depending on the production company, an extra is paid for time on set.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a professional headshot taken. This headshot should be a really tight closeup of your face. Only capture from the shoulders up. Refrain from wearing heavy makeup. Keep it light -- your makeup should only enhance your natural beauty. Keep the jewelry to a minimum. Stay away from busy patterns. Solids are best.

Create an acting resume. Your acting resume should include your name, contact information, and demographics, such as your height, weight, clothing and shoe sizes, hair color and eye color. It should also include all of your "set" and stage experience. It doesn't matter if your experience is for uncredited work. All experience counts.

Submit your resume and headshot to local casting agencies, such as Fincannon & Associates, Hollywood East Casting and Maultsby Model & Talent Agency (see Resources). If the casting director for the agency likes your look, you. will be contacted.

Check the Wilmington Regional Film Commission website for movies that are shooting in Wilmington. You can also check the North Carolina Film Office website for other movies that are shooting in the area. The North Carolina Film Office site will list not only Wilmington movies, but also movies for the rest of the state.

When searching for roles without going through an agency, be sure to read the casting call information for the movie. The casting call information tells you where to send your headshot and resume. If your look fits with the movie, the casting director will contact you and ask you to be an extra.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't limit yourself to North Carolina. Look for movies that are casting all over the Southeast. If you are willing to travel, look for roles in other places as well.

  • As a rule of thumb, you should never pay money to be an extra in a movie. If a company or individual is asking you for money in return for a role as an extra, it's likely a scam.
