How to Turn Your Vegetable Oil Waste Into Diesel

How to Turn Your Vegetable Oil Waste Into Diesel thumbnail
Vegetable oil waste can be converted to be used in a diesel engine.

Your vegetable oil waste can be used to run a diesel car. It is an innovative way to cut off fossil fuel consumption. What is needed is to collect fried and used oil, normally available in local restaurans, and go it through one of the oil convert processors and/or kits. You will obtain a biodiesel usable almost for every diesel vehicle, either car or truck. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, biodiesel is low-cost and biodegradable, its resources are reproducible and renewable, it lessens pollution and reduces the natural deterioration of you engine (See References 1).

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle with diesel engine
  • Vegetable oil conversion kit or processor
  • Cylindric pump with flexible tube
  • 4 to 6 plastic pots
  • 2 larger plastic containers
  • 4 to 5 micron filters
  • Big colander

Instructions

    • 1

Buy, online or from specific companies, e.g. Frybrid Vegetable Oil Systems, a vegetable

      conversion kit. (See Reference 2)

    • 2

Install a vegetable oil conversion kit and arrange for a second storage chamber. Be sure to prepare a switch so that you can interchange from one fuel tank to the other. (Reference 1 & 3)

    • 3

Find a source of waste vegetable oil. Supermarket and restaurants are generally willing to give it away for free. (Reference 1 & 3)

    • 4

Insert the end of the cylindric pump into the source of waste vegetable oil, then place the tube inside one of the empty plastic containers. The same process must be repeated until you are satisfied with the quantity of oil collected. (Reference 1 & 3)

    • 5

Filter the collected oil, removing all particles, and put it in the plastic pots. Before putting the vegetable oil in the diesel engine, be sure that all particles are removed from the oil. Once the oil is collected into the plastic pouts, pour the oil through the large colander into one of the larger plastic containers. Allow the oil to settle for some days. Using the pump, pass the oil through the micron filters and transfer it from the first large plastic barrel to the second. (Reference 1 & 3)

    • 6

Place the end of the pump in the filtered vegetable oil, and put the end of the flexible tube directly into your vegetable oil tank. Turn over the pump to transfer the oil to the tank. (Reference 1 & 3)

Tips & Warnings

  • Never never fuel your vehicle with vegetable oil not converted to biodiesel. It will damage your engine. (See Reference 3)

  • Be sure that the vehicle to convert is in good condition.

  • If you convert your car to run on vegetable oil, you are probably violating the warranty of your vehicle.

  • Running a vehicle on vegetable oil is not still authorised by the Environmental Protection Agency.
