How to Prune a Weeping Fig
Weeping figs are a popular type of bonsai tree. Bonsais are miniature versions of larger trees, usually grown indoors. Weeping figs are often trimmed and twisted into various shapes, which gives them the distinctive bonsai appearance. One of the primary things any bonsai owner needs to do for a successful tree is prune it regularly. Pruning helps to remove any dead, dying or damaged branches, which keeps the tree healthy, and it will maintain the bonsai's appearance as well. The same pruning process can be used on larger indoor versions of the weeping fig. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Prune the weeping fig in the early spring, before it has begun to bud or produce leaves.
-
2
Check all the branches of the bonsai tree. Cut any dead or damaged branches all the way back to the trunk and dispose of them first.
-
-
3
Trim any branches that interfere with the shape of the tree or cause it to look unbalanced. Cut branches back as far as necessary to maintain the appearance of the weeping fig bonsai tree.
-
4
Prune any new growth that could interfere with the appearance of the tree as well. Check for suckers along the trunk of the tree, and remove any branches along the trunk or base of the tree that alter the shape of the tree.
-
5
Prune the roots of the bonsai tree as well. The area of the roots should be roughly the same size as the area taken up by the branches. Trim the roots down to maintain an even growth pattern.
-
6
Re-pot the weeping fig every year or two, when it begins to outgrow its pot. Prune the bonsai tree according to Steps 1 to 6 before transplanting the weeping fig to a new pot.
