Rain and cold weather can pose an additional threat to the already dangerous proposition of riding a motorcycle. While the potholes, obstacles and other vehicles can put an end to a quick ride, another threat appears within your helmet: fog. While its not typically a problem on fair weather days, helmet visors have a tendency to haze or fog in colder weather as your breath forms condensation against the inside of the visor. A few things can be done to alleviate the problems, some being more of a short-term fix than others.

  • Microfiber cloth

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the helmet's air vents while riding, especially the vents near the eye port and the chin bar, to increase air flow around the visor's inner face. Open the visor partially, if weather permits, to clear out excessive fogging.

      Clean the visor's inner face, using a plastic-safe anti-fog cleaning spray and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth. These cleaners form a vapor-resistant barrier on the inside of the visor, preventing fog from forming as you ride.

      Install a breath deflector between the helmet's chin bar and eye port. Breath deflectors prevent fog by channeling your exhaled breaths toward the bottom of the chin bar and away from the visor. In most cases, a breath deflector is simply pressed in the space between the chin bar's outer shall and the inner lining.

      Replace your helmet's visor with a Pinlock-capable visor. Pinlock visors employ a replaceable insert that seals against the visor's inner face, forming an insulated seal similar to a double-paned window. Release the helmet's visor, using the shield lock levers on the side of the helmet, and pull the visor away. Install the Pinlock visor in the reverse method of removal.
