How to Use Presta Valve Inner Tubes

Bicycle tires are fitted with an inner tube. The inner tube gives the tire shape and offers the wheel protection from the road. Generally bicycle tires use either a Schrader or Presta valve for purposes of inflation. Comparatively, Presta valves are thinner and, unlike Schrader valves, include a threaded nut at the tip. If using a Schrader pump to inflate a Presta valve, a valve adapter is required for compatibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the nut on the Presta valve tip counterclockwise to open the valve. Back out the nut fully.

    • 2

Twist the adapter onto the valve until it is fully seated. If the pump head is too big for the valve, an adapter is required. Some pumps have interchangeable heads, in which case no adapter is required.

    • 3

Press the pump head onto the Presta valve. If the pump has a locking lever, lock the lever now.

    • 4

Use the pump to inflate the inner tube. The amount of air required will depend on the tire's recommended inflation pressure. This figure can be found on the side of the tire.

    • 5

Remove the pump head. Unscrew the valve adapter.

    • 6

Screw in the Presta valve nut to seal the valve.
