Instructions for a Speedex Key Cutter 9160MC
The Premier Speedex (9160MC) is a manual key-cutting machine that will cut most sizes of keys, including large keys such as those for hotel room doors. Its four-way jaws hold a variety of key blanks and double-sided keys. The Premier Speedex is designed for ease and simplicity of use. As long as you insert the keys in the jaws properly, it is tough to cut incorrectly. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Insert the key to be duplicated between the jaws on the left side (the tracer side) of the Speedex 9160MC. The jaws are the two square devices at the front of the machine. The keys slip inside the slotted opening horizontally, with the key shoulder (the part you hold when unlocking a door) to the left and the key shaft on the right.
-
2
Tighten the wingnut on the jaw to secure it in place, and flip the arm down.
-
-
3
Adjust the key shoulder so that it is flush with the gauge, and tighten.
-
4
Repeat the process on the right side (cutter side) with the key blank. Check that the key is flush with the back and bottom of the jaw. The ridged or cut edge should face up, and it should not be clamped inside the clamp.
-
5
Check that keys are straight in the cutter and tracer sides. Both should be horizontal with no angle at all.
-
6
Flip the gauge arm back (the flat bar on the top of the Speedex 9160MC) and turn the machine on. The cutter will begin spinning when machine is on.
-
7
Bring the carriage (the unit holding the keys) up to engage the cutter (also called a copy dog) and move from right to left. The carriage moves only from right to left to cut the key. Moving it the opposite direction can damage your cutter.
-
8
Move the carriage down after the first pass. Repeat moving the carriage from right to left to make a finishing pass.
-
9
Cut the other side of the key if necessary (automotive keys, for example) by loosening the wingnut on both sides and flipping the keys over.
-
10
Turn off the machine and remove the key. Switch it back on and brush both sides and deburr the metal using the brush (attached to a wheel) on the right side of the machine.
-
11
Remove the original key. Your key is now cut.

Tips & Warnings
If the cutter does not contact the key blank when the carriage is up, the cutter is set too shallow. If it cuts through the key, it is set too deep. Adjust by setting two key blanks of the same thickness and width into the jaws to determine adjustment needed. Use an Allen key to loosen the clamp screw on top of the cutting unit, then use a flat-head screwdriver to turn the gib screw (on the side of the cutting unit) clockwise to cut deeper and counterclockwise to cut more shallow. Retighten clamp when the cutter is adjusted.
The Speedex 9160MC has four cutting vises to hold different sizes of keys. If the key does not fit securely in the vise, pull it out, loosen the wingnut and turn the vise (square unit that holds the keys) to clockwise to try another slot. The V slot will hold thinner, hard-to-hold keys.
Coat bearings and sliding surfaces with a light grease at least once every six months.
Steel shafts and all other exposed steel surfaces should be sprayed with WD-40 or another similar type of oil every six months. Wipe off any excess after spraying.
To clean the Speedex key cutter, remove all brass shavings, dirt and debris from the surface daily using a soft-bristled brush (a small paintbrush works well). The key vise area should always be free of residue and buildup.
The bearings in the cutter shaft area are "oil lite" and need no lubrication.
Never touch the cutter wheel or the brush when in motion. It is very sharp and when the machine is on will cause serious injury. Hold the carriage unit that holds the keys when cutting, and keep fingers well away from the cutter.
Never remove keys when the machine is on.
