How to Secure a Boat to a Trailer for Transport
If you're a trailer-boater, your boat may be stored on a trailer and transported to and from a local launching area, or you may tow it long distances while on vacation trips. You can transport your boat safely by using the right tie-downs and making sure they are securely fastened. Properly securing your boat to the trailer will prevent accidental damage and make the move go smoothly.
Things You'll Need
- Trailer with winch
- Safety chain or strap
- Transom tie-down straps
- Gunwale strap
Instructions
-
-
1
Winch the boat into place on the trailer, with the bow held tightly against the v-stop or bow roller.
-
2
Attach the safety chain or strap (a transom tie-down will work) from the bow eye down to a location on the trailer and tighten securely.
-
-
3
Attach the transom tie-downs to the transom eyes or hook over the top of the transom, and attach to the trailer. Pull the slack out of the tie-downs so they are snug.
-
4
Throw the gunwale tie-down strap over the boat, forward of the stern, and secure it to both sides of the trailer. Adjust using the ratchet for a tight fit.

Tips & Warnings
Safety chains, transom tie-downs, and tie-down straps are available at marine supply stores.
Remove any items from inside the boat that might come loose and blow out during towing.
Use a safety chain to secure the bow and keep it from bouncing on the trailer.
All straps must be tightly and securely fastened.
