How to Recycle Scrap Cars

How to Recycle Scrap Cars thumbnail
Many vehicles that have been considered "totaled" after an accident are taken to a junkyard for recycling.

The term "scrap car" describes a vehicle that has run its course and can no longer serve for regular use. Many junkyards and recycling centers will take your scrap car and recycle the parts that are still in good condition. Other vehicle owners with the same year, make, and model can go to these facilities to pull parts from old scrap cars and use them to repair their own vehicles.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a vehicle junkyard or recycling center in your area.

    • 2

Contact the company you have selected and set up an appointment to have your scrap car recycled.

    • 3

Have your vehicle towed to the junkyard or recycling center. In most cases the facility will provide free towing. If not, it will be able to recommend a towing company for you.

    • 4

Sign and complete the necessary paperwork to recycle your car. Include your contact information, year, make, and model. This information will help the company determine how to classify the vehicle and where on the lot it will be located. Check off whether the tires are still inflated. In many cases, if the tires have not been inflated for a long period of time, they will be worn out and recycled as scrap rubber. If the tires are inflated and still have tread, they can be recycled and sold as used tires.
