How to Line Up a Cane Pole

Cane-pole fishing for bluegill

If fishing is so expensive that you can't get past the retail phase, cane pole fishing is the antidote. For a few dollars, you can buy and outfit a cane pole--a bamboo fishing pole 6 to 12 feet long. Bamboo has the combined strength and flexibility to hold fighting fish without breaking, and it is cheap. Lining, or rigging, the cane pole is easy enough for a child to do, which is why this is a form of fishing children like. But can pole fishing is fun and productive for adults, too.

Things You'll Need

  • Cane pole
  • Spool of 6-pound test fishing line
  • Scissors or nail clippers
  • 3/0 Split shot

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the line twice the length of the cane pole. Tie one end between the last two joints of the cane pole on the narrow end, using a round turn and two half hitches. Pass the end of the line around the pole twice. Pass the tip of the line around the line hanging from the pole, then back through the loop created by crossing the line, tightening the half hitch against the pole. Repeat another half hitch. Trim the tail to about 2 inches.

Stretch the line along the length of the pole and cut the line so it's one foot longer than your cane pole. Your completed rig will have a line the length of the pole. The excess is for tying the bobber and hook. Slide your bobber onto the line and secure it about 3 feet up (2 feet up along the pole).

Tie on your hook. Pass the end of the line through the hook eye twice, creating a loop around the eye. Twist the free end around line itself three times, then through the loop around the eye. Pinch the hook eye and knot between your fingers with one hand, and pull on the line leading to the pole until the knot tightens down. Attach the split shot to the line around 8 inches from the hook. Bite down on the shot to secure it. Now go fish.
