Securing a load on a forklift involves a few simple precautions.

Proper load handling on a forklift is important for both safety and quality control. If you fail to properly secure your load, not only do you risk losing valuable products, but you also compromise the safety of your co-workers and even yourself. Securing the load begins with your approach to and pick-up of the load. In addition, securing your load properly allows you to maintain stability while driving the forklift. The keys are not exceeding the forklift's load capacity and not using counter-weights in an attempt to balance a heavy load.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the nameplate on your forklift to determine the weight capacity and make sure you do not exceed it.

    • 2

Spread the forks on your forklift as wide as the equipment will allow. This will make sure the weight is evenly distributed. Make sure you are using any appropriate lift fixture required, such as a carpet spike or a drum grabber.

    • 3

Drive the forklift in position to lift the load and put the forks through the pallet far enough to make sure you can secure the load completely on the forklift. Make sure the load is centered, not leaning to one side. Shift the forks backward to tilt the weight so that it leans back against the forklift.

    • 4

Tie down any loose or uneven ends on your load with tie-down straps. Lift your load and tilt it back one more time before driving. Drive with the forks about 10 inches above the ground to avoid tipping over.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your load blocks your vision, you should drive in reverse so your can see the path in front of you clearly. Do not try to lean around the side and see past the load.

  • Never reach through the mast of the forklift in an attempt to adjust your load and do not attempt to adjust the load while moving.

  • When carrying your load, do not carry anything on the overhead guard. Doing so will destabilize the load and can lead to an accident.
