The 2000 Silverado is a full-size pickup truck designed and manufactured by General Motors and sold under the Chevrolet name brand. The Silverado is equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation valve. The EGR valve is important to the vehicle's efficiency and gas consumption. The valve directs all exhaust into the intake manifold where the gasses are then cooled before entering the engine. If your Silverado starts to run poorly and uses more gas, test the EGR to see if it's working properly.

Step 1

Park the Silverado and allow the truck to cool for a half-hour. If the vehicle was recently driven an extended period of time, let the vehicle cool for up to an hour or until all components are cool to touch.

Step 2

Open the hood and locate the EGR valve. The valve is directly in front of the oil filler neck on the passenger side of the vehicle. It is a small, metal circular valve with a wire coming from the top of it.

Step 3

Turn the engine on and press on the gas. It's best to have two people do this job as one can press the accelerator while the other watches the valve. The valve's plunger mechanism should move up and down freely. If the valve does not move fast and free, the valve needs to be replaced.
