The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams offer adult students the opportunity to complete their college degrees faster by getting credit for what they already know. Here's how to make the most of the CLEP experience.

From Quick Guide: Preparing for College
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the tests you will take. There are 34 exams in two categories: general and subject. Although there is no limit to the number of tests you may take, most schools do limit the amount of credit they will award through CLEP.

  2. Step 2

Find out when and where the CLEP exams are being offered. Each college sets its own testing schedule, which you can find out through the registrar's office.

  3. Step 3

Register through your college test center. Each CLEP exam costs $44, plus a $10 test center administration fee.

  4. Step 4

Plan your strategy. You will be allowed 90 minutes for each test, and each question has equal value, so don't spend too much time on any one question. Also, scores are computed such that each correct answer is counted, and from that total, a fraction of incorrect answers is subtracted. There is no deduction for unanswered questions. Read between the lines and don't guess.

  5. Step 5

Follow up on your test results. According to the College Board, scoring takes place within 48 hours once the Educational Testing Service (ETS) receives the answer sheets. Expect your score reports to be mailed to you and the college you named within two weeks of taking the exams.

  6. Step 6

Congratulate yourself. You've got a leg up on that degree, so go for it!

on 8/22/2006 There is a penalty for doing so, but it actually is better to guess. You're guesses usually are not totally blind. You can take out the obviously wrong answers, and then you have a chance after that to guess right. The penalty is a fraction of a point, so if you get one right guessing it will take several wrong answers to deduct that point. The only way guessing will hurt you is if you don't know any of the test material at all, in which case you shouldn't be wasting your money on a CLEP test.
