Becoming a home inspector in New Mexico can be a fairly easy process. Although some states do not license home inspectors, most of them need to be certified. Sign up for a home inspector training course. The Professional Home Inspection Institute offers distance courses, online courses and classroom training, which is located in Madison, South Dakota. The Professional Home Inspection Institute's New Mexico home inspector training course provides a course outline that helps prospective inspectors learn what to inspect, how to inspect it, the basics of heating and plumbing systems, roof inspections, door inspections, gas lines, coding, electrical and property and guidelines on how to write a report. Find a professional home inspector to serve as your mentor and follow her around on the job. Study each and everything she does. Watch what she looks for. It may be best to work as an intern to learn the ropes before jumping into the profession of home inspection first. Becoming an intern may serve as a way to gain experience before landing a job.

Apply for a membership with the American Society for Home Inspectors. Although the state of New Mexico currently does not have a minimal requirement of formal education, licensing or certification, it's best to have formal training in the home inspection field. Most other states have age requirements, the requirement of having a high school diploma or GED, and most states require passing a certification exam.
