How to Renew a PR Card
A Permanent Residency card is required of any permanent resident of Canada who intends to travel out of or into the country via commercial transportation. These status documents expire and require renewal every five years. As long as you fulfill eligibility requirements, complete an application and pay the renewal fee you can successfully renew your PR card. Be sure to use accuracy and include all necessary documents in order to prevent delays in the processing of your application.

Assess your eligibility to receive a PR renewal card. By Canadian law, you must: be a permanent resident of Canada, be physically present in Canada, not be under an effective removal order, not be a Canadian citizen or a registered Indian under the Indian Act and not be convicted of an offense related to the misuse of a PR card.

Obtain an application for a permanent residency card, which includes a Supplementary Identification and HPM Receipt form. These are two separate items but both are contained within the application. You can download an application from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website.

Review the expiration date of your present PR card, if it is in your possession. If you are renewing an expired card you will need to relinquish the old card by mailing it along with your completed application. If your card is still valid you can keep it and exchange it when your new card is presented.

Secure a copy of a primary and secondary form of identification as well as other required documentation. Two photographs taken within the previous 12 months is another requirement.

Ensure that all documents are true copies by having them certified by a qualified individual, such as a dentist, pharmacist or postmaster.

Complete and sign the application. Make sure that the signature is in black ink and fits within the provided box. Applicants under the age of 14 must have their applications signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Attach a photograph to the adhesive square located on the application form.

Pay your renewal fee at a national financial institution or use a credit card to pay via the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website. There is a $50 renewal fee per person applying for a Permanent Residency card.

Mail your completed application forms along with the required documentation to:

Tips & Warnings
If your PR card has been lost or stolen, you must report it to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada Call Centre.
Applicants under the age of 18 must include a certified copy of their birth certificate or legal documentation proving guardianship.
If your name has changed you will need supporting legal documents to prove so.
You will need a printer to print a receipt for your renewal fee if paid online.
